Insurance Basics

What Does Boat Insurance Cover?

Boat policies are built from several parts. Which parts you have, and their limits, depend on the policy you choose.

Physical damage to your boat

Often called hull coverage, this addresses damage to the boat itself, subject to the policy's terms, exclusions and deductible. How the boat is valued in a total loss — agreed value or actual cash value — is a key detail.

Liability

Liability coverage generally addresses injuries to other people or damage to their property that you are legally responsible for while operating your boat.

Medical payments

Some policies include medical payments coverage for people injured on your boat, regardless of fault, up to a limit.

Uninsured boaters

Some policies offer coverage when you are injured by a boater who does not carry enough insurance.

Optional coverages

Depending on the insurer, options may include on-water towing and assistance, trailer coverage, personal effects, fishing equipment and fuel spill liability. Availability varies — ask what is included versus optional.
